Description

A restrained American-market dress watch from the Longines-Wittnauer Watch Company, and it has kept the things that usually go missing.

The dial is silver with applied markers, a raised 12 at the top and the Wittnauer V below centre. Slim rolled gold plate case, gold-tone expanding bracelet, and a profile thin enough to disappear under a shirt sleeve.

It arrives in its original red Wittnauer presentation box with the Guarantee and Instructions booklet still inside, printed PRODUCT OF LONGINES-WITTNAUER WATCH COMPANY, INC. The box and the booklet together are worth as much as the watch.

Historical Significance

Wittnauer was the American arm of the Longines-Wittnauer Watch Company, and for most of the twentieth century it was how Longines reached the United States. Wittnauer's own watches were made to the same commercial standard and sold alongside, which is why the guarantee booklet carries both names. Complete boxed examples with the paperwork intact are far scarcer than the watches themselves, since the box was usually the first thing thrown away.
