Seiko Crown | Silver Dial | Gold-Plated | Manual Wind | Diashock 19 Jewels

Description

Seiko before Seiko was a global name. The Crown was the company's senior manual-wind line of the early 1960s, the platform that led directly to Grand Seiko, and it shows in the dial work.

Long faceted gold markers radiate from the centre and catch light in hard lines, set against a plain silver ground with the Seiko Crown script and Diashock 19jewels beneath. The case is gently domed, gold plated to twenty microns on the front over a steel back, and it sits on black grained leather.

Nothing on this dial is printed that could have been applied instead, which is the whole argument for the Crown.

Historical Significance

The Crown was Seiko's flagship manual-wind line from 1959, built at the Suwa and Daini factories in the run-up to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and it is the direct ancestor of the first Grand Seiko of 1960. Diashock was Seiko's own shock protection system, its answer to Incabloc. Crowns are where Japanese watchmaking stopped imitating Switzerland and started competing with it.
