Seiko 6139-6040 "Silver Ghost" | Automatic Chronograph | Ghost Bezel | Day-Date | 1970s

Description

The Seiko 6139 is one of the most historically significant chronographs ever produced. Launched in 1969, it is credited as one of the first automatic chronograph movements in history, produced alongside Zenith's El Primero and the Heuer/Breitling Chronomatic consortium. Colonel William Pogue wore a 6139 aboard the Skylab 4 mission in 1973, making it the first automatic chronograph in space. This is not just a vintage watch. It is a piece of horological history.

This particular variant is the 6139-6040, known among collectors as the "Silver Ghost." The name comes from the model's signature aging characteristic: the first quarter of the tachymeter bezel (from 12 to 3 o'clock) gradually fades over time, losing its markings and creating a distinctive ghostly bare section that contrasts with the remaining legible portion. This natural aging effect is not damage. It is one of the most sought-after patina features in vintage Seiko collecting, and it is what gives the Silver Ghost its name. Our example displays this ghost effect clearly, with the first quarter of the bezel faded to bare black while the rest retains its white tachymeter numerals.

The silver dial has a sunburst finish that shifts between warm silver and cool grey depending on the light. "SEIKO CHRONOGRAPH AUTOMATIC" text sits below 12 o'clock in three stacked lines. Applied steel stick indices mark each hour with strong contrast against the silver background. A single 30-minute chronograph register at 6 o'clock with its own graduated scale tracks elapsed minutes during chronograph operation. Day and date windows at 3 o'clock display both in blue-bordered white frames.

The steel tonneau case with its integrated crown and pusher at 2 o'clock is a signature of the 6139 line. The chronograph is operated through this single pusher, which starts, stops, and resets the function. The original Seiko steel bracelet with flat oyster-style links is present and adds substantial wrist presence.

Historical Significance

The Seiko 6139 holds a permanent place in horological history as one of the first automatic chronograph movements ever produced. The race to be "first" between Seiko, Zenith (El Primero), and the Heuer-Breitling consortium in 1969 remains one of watchmaking's most debated stories. Colonel William Pogue wore a 6139 aboard Skylab 4 in 1973, making it the first automatic chronograph in space. The 6139-6040 "Silver Ghost" variant is particularly collected because of its clean silver dial and the desirable ghost bezel effect, where natural aging fades the first quarter of the tachymeter markings. This aging pattern cannot be artificially reproduced, making each ghosted bezel unique. Values for 6139 variants have been climbing steadily as awareness of Seiko's historical contributions grows. The Silver Ghost, with its combination of space-age heritage, automatic chronograph innovation, and the collectible ghost bezel, represents one of the most compelling value propositions in vintage chronograph collecting.

A piece of watchmaking history with the desirable ghost bezel effect that collectors specifically seek. The 6139-6040 Silver Ghost combines space-age heritage, first-generation automatic chronograph technology, and a natural patina feature that makes each example unique. Original bracelet intact.
