Omega Seamaster De Ville | Quartz | 10K Gold Filled | Named 1979 Service Award

Description

Two Omega lines on one dial. Seamaster for the case construction, De Ville for the dress styling, and under the wordmark the single word Quartz, from the period when Omega was putting its new electronic calibres into its most conservative cases.

The silver dial is clean and legible, applied gold batons against a plain ground with a date aperture at 3. The 10K gold filled case sits on a gold-tone beads-of-rice bracelet with a signed Omega clasp, a combination that wears far lighter than it looks.

What lifts this one out of the ordinary is the back. It is engraved GEORGE J. KELCHAK, KRAFT INC, 25 YEARS SERVICE, 4-5-79. A named recipient, a named employer and a day in April 1979, all legible at full magnification. A watch given to a man for a quarter century of work, and nobody has polished the record off it.

Historical Significance

Omega put the Seamaster name on cases built to a standard rather than a style, so a Seamaster De Ville is a dress watch with a proper Omega case behind it. Through the late 1970s Omega was moving its quartz calibres into exactly these conservative gold-filled forms, aimed at the American corporate market. Twenty five year service awards were bought in quantity by companies like Kraft, which is why so many survive, and why so few still carry the name of the man who earned one.
