Omega Electronic f300Hz De Ville Chronometer | Tuning Fork | Ref. 198.0030 | Cal. 1250 | 1970s

Description

The Omega f300Hz is one of the most fascinating chapters in watchmaking history. Before quartz took over completely, there was a brief window where tuning fork technology represented the cutting edge of timekeeping. The f300Hz vibrates at 300 cycles per second (compared to a mechanical watch's 5-10 beats per second), delivering accuracy that rivaled early quartz while maintaining a sweeping seconds hand that moves like a mechanical watch.

This De Ville Chronometer version features a silver linen-textured dial with a date window at 3 o'clock. The crosshatch linen texture catches light differently depending on the angle, giving the dial a dimensional quality that flat dials lack. Chronometer certification means this watch met the highest accuracy standards of its time.

Original black factory sealing lacquer remains intact around the medallion. This blue wax is not ink, paint, or residue. It is factory-applied sealing lacquer used by Omega to secure the medallion and provide an additional moisture barrier.

On most watches, this lacquer disappeared long ago due to repeated servicing, polishing, or aggressive cleaning. Its survival here is a strong originality indicator and immediately signals careful ownership and minimal interference over the decades. Seasoned collectors actively look for this detail.

The steel case houses the Caliber 1250 tuning fork movement, and the blue croc-embossed leather strap adds a touch of color that complements the silver dial beautifully.

Historical Significance

The f300Hz represents Omega's answer to the emerging quartz technology of the early 1970s. Rather than jumping straight to quartz, Omega (along with Bulova's Accutron) developed tuning fork technology as an intermediate step between mechanical and quartz. The tuning fork vibrates at 300Hz, producing a distinctive hum instead of the ticking of a mechanical watch. The Caliber 1250 was chronometer-certified, meaning it met the strictest accuracy standards. Production of f300Hz watches was relatively brief, as quartz technology quickly overtook tuning fork movements, making these watches a snapshot of a pivotal moment in horological history. They are increasingly sought after by collectors who appreciate the engineering ambition they represent.

A rare piece of transitional watchmaking technology. The f300Hz sits at the crossroads of mechanical and electronic horology, and examples in this condition are becoming genuinely scarce.
