Description

A small rectangular dress watch built around a stepped bezel, with reeded shoulders at each end of the case that echo the links of the bracelet. The effect is closer to jewellery than horology, which is what the Elegance name was for.

The dial is two-tone, a brushed silver centre panel floating inside a champagne outer ring, with gold Roman numerals and fleur accents around the edge. The bracelet is a two-tone fancy link in gold and white metal that follows the wrist closely.

Historical Significance

Citizen has been in Tokyo since 1918 and by the 1980s was producing quartz in volumes no Swiss house could match, which freed its designers to spend effort on cases and dials instead. Elegance was the dress range, aimed squarely at the jewellery counter, and the stepped case and fancy-link bracelet here show a maker treating a small ladies watch as a piece of design rather than a movement carrier.
