The Vendome is one of the defining shapes of the Les Must de Cartier era: a slim round vermeil case with the signature bandeau lugs that wrap over the strap, a design language that is unmistakably Cartier. This 24mm example is powered by a Cartier Paris quartz movement and dates to circa 1990.

What sets this piece apart is the dial. The brown lacquer has developed a fine web of cracks over the decades, the celebrated spider dial effect. In shadow it reads almost black; in daylight it warms to a rich chocolate brown, with the crackle pattern revealing itself on close inspection. Spider dials are prized by collectors precisely because no two age the same way, and Cartier examples are far scarcer than their Rolex and Omega counterparts.

The dial, case, movement, crystal, crown and Cartier buckle are all original to the watch. The hands are period-correct aftermarket replacements, disclosed here and reflected in the pricing.

Condition Report

• Dial: Original brown spider dial. The crackle is visible up close and gives the watch its character; at arm's length the dial reads clean and even.
• Hands: Aftermarket, period-correct sword-style hands in gold tone. Not original, fully disclosed.
• Case: Original vermeil case with light wear to the plating, consistent with age. Signs of use show in the macro photos but are not significant to the naked eye.
• Crown: Original Cartier crown. The cabochon is missing; function and water resistance at the stem are unaffected.
• Crystal: Original, clean and clear.
• Movement: Cartier Paris quartz running accurately on a new battery.
• Strap and Buckle: Aftermarket leather strap in very good condition. Original Cartier buckle included, with slight wear.

Historical Significance

Les Must de Cartier launched in the 1970s to bring true Cartier design within reach, using vermeil cases in place of solid gold, and the Vendome quickly became one of the line's icons. The spider dial phenomenon traces to the 1980s, when lacquer mixtures used by dial suppliers shared across Cartier, Rolex and Omega began to craze over time. What started as a production flaw is now one of the most sought-after forms of natural patina in vintage collecting, and Cartier spider dials surface far less often than the others.
