Omega Seamaster Calendar | Ref 2849 | Cal 503 | Original Black Dial | Rose Gold Capped | 1950s

Description

The Seamaster Calendar was Omega's first automatic Seamaster with a date, and this one has the look collectors chase: a black dial, warm gilt printing and rose-toned applied Arabic numerals at 12, 6 and 9 between faceted baton markers.

Seamaster in script and Calendar in capitals sit above the six, with the date in a framed window at three. This is reference 2849 with Omega's calibre 503 automatic. The case is rose gold capped, a thick layer of solid gold over the steel rather than plating, in the classic round 1950s Seamaster shape with a stainless steel back, worn on brown leather with an Omega buckle. Most 2849s were made in steel or yellow gold, so a rose gold example with its original black dial is the uncommon combination.

The dial is original, and it has aged to a deep green-black with speckled patina across the surface. An untouched black Seamaster dial is the one collectors look for, since so many were repainted over the years.

Historical Significance

Omega launched the Seamaster in 1948, and through the mid-1950s added the Calendar, a self-winding Seamaster with a date, built around the 500-series automatic calibres. The 2849 of the mid to late 1950s, with its round case, applied Arabic numerals and the calibre 503, is the classic Seamaster Calendar, and original black-dial examples in rose gold remain among the most wanted vintage Seamasters.
