IWC Schaffhausen Automatic | Silver Dial | Stainless Steel | Date

Description

IWC of Schaffhausen sits in the front rank of Swiss manufactures, and this vintage automatic is the house at its most restrained. The steel case is understated, the lugs faceted, and the whole watch is built around a silver sunburst dial that is genuinely exceptional for its age.

Applied faceted baton markers sit against a fine dot minute track, with the script International Watch Co signature at twelve and a framed date at three. It retains its IWC signed crown and IWC signed buckle on black grained leather.

Historical Significance

Founded in 1868 by the American engineer Florentine Ariosto Jones, IWC is the only major Swiss manufacture in German-speaking Schaffhausen. Automatics of this type from the 1960s ran the in-house calibre 8541, a twenty-one jewel movement with a Breguet overcoil hairspring, built alongside and shared with the celebrated Ingenieur. They are quietly regarded as some of the best-made dress watches of the period, and dials of this quality seldom survive.
