Vintage Longines Buying Guide: Models, Calibers, and Pricing in India
Longines is one of the most underrated vintage watch brands. The Swiss manufacturer has been making watches continuously since 1832, one of the oldest in the industry. During the mid-20th century, Longines produced movements that rivaled Omega and Jaeger-LeCoultre while competing on price. Today, vintage Longines offers some of the best value in Swiss watchmaking.
This guide covers the major vintage Longines collections, the movements that powered them, and what to look for when buying in India.
The Major Vintage Longines Lines
Longines Conquest
Introduced in 1954, the Conquest was Longines' answer to the Omega Seamaster. Automatic movement, water resistant case, clean dial layout. Early Conquests from the 1950s with their enamel "Longines" signature on the caseback are the most desirable. Later Conquests from the 1960s and 1970s are more affordable and still excellent value.
Price range in India: Rs 25,000 to Rs 70,000 for good examples.
Longines Admiral
The Admiral line launched in the late 1950s as a premium automatic range. The Admiral Five Star is the most collected variant, featuring a distinctive five-star marking on the dial below the Longines signature. These were chronometer-rated watches, meaning they were certified for accuracy.
Price range: Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000.
Longines Flagship
The Flagship was positioned as a dressy automatic watch throughout the 1960s. Cleaner dials than the sportier Conquest, often with applied indices and beautiful dauphine hands. The Caliber 340 and 341 automatic movements inside are well-regarded for reliability.
Price range: Rs 20,000 to Rs 55,000.
Longines Ultra-Thin Dress Watches
Longines has a long tradition of ultra-thin dress watches, going back to the 1930s. The Caliber 847 and its derivatives powered some of the thinnest watches of the 1960s. These are pure dress pieces - no date, no complications, just time.
Price range: Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000. NOS examples command premiums.
Longines Ellipse
The Ellipse was Longines' entry into the oval case category in the 1970s, directly competing with the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse. Elegant dress piece with distinctive oval proportions.
Price range: Rs 20,000 to Rs 60,000.
Longines Tank (Rectangular)
Longines made rectangular dress watches inspired by the Cartier Tank throughout the 20th century. These offer the Cartier aesthetic at significantly lower prices, often with 10K white gold filled cases and guilloche detailing.
Price range: Rs 30,000 to Rs 80,000 depending on rarity.
Longines Chronographs
Longines has a significant chronograph heritage, particularly from the 1940s-1960s. The 13ZN and 30CH calibers are considered among the finest vintage chronograph movements ever produced. These command serious collector prices.
Price range: Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 10,00,000+ depending on reference and condition.
Longines Gold Mesh and Bracelet Models
Longines produced beautiful rectangular and round gold watches with integrated gold mesh bracelets throughout the 1970s. Complete sets with original box and papers are increasingly rare.
Price range: Rs 30,000 to Rs 1,00,000.
Key Longines Calibers
Caliber 23Z: Manual wind dress movement, used in 1940s-1950s watches. Elegant finishing, reliable.
Caliber 19AS: Small manual wind used in ladies' watches and ultra-thin dress pieces.
Caliber 340/341: Automatic movements used in 1960s Flagship and Admiral pieces. Reliable workhorse calibers.
Caliber 847: Ultra-thin manual wind from the 1960s, used in the thinnest Longines dress watches.
Caliber L990: Late vintage automatic (1970s-80s), precursor to modern Longines movements.
Caliber L193: Column-wheel chronograph movement, found in premium Longines chronographs.
What to Look For
Dial originality. Longines dials are particularly prone to refinishing. Look for even patina, crisp printing, and applied indices that show age-appropriate wear. Longines used a distinctive enamel technique on some dials that is very difficult to replicate in refinishing.
Case condition. Longines cases from the 1960s-70s were often gold filled or gold capped. Check for wear at the lug edges where plating wears first. A heavily worn case indicates the watch has been through a lot, even if mechanically sound.
Movement servicing. Longines movements are generally reliable but need service every 4-5 years. Ask when the watch was last serviced and by whom.
Originality of parts. Longines crown, hands, and dial should all match the reference. Replacement crowns (common on heavily worn watches) reduce value.
Why Longines Is a Smart Buy
Longines offers arguably the best value in the vintage Swiss market today. The brand's quality during the vintage era was equal to Omega, but current prices are typically 40-60% lower. A 1960s Longines Flagship with a Caliber 340 automatic is mechanically identical in quality to an Omega Constellation with a Caliber 561, but costs roughly half.
As the Omega and Longines markets continue to diverge in price, vintage Longines represents a genuine buying opportunity. The watches offer serious craftsmanship at accessible prices, and values are slowly climbing as awareness grows.
