Vintage Cartier Tank Buying Guide: Must, Française, Louis Cartier
The Cartier Tank is one of the most iconic watch designs ever made. Introduced in 1917 by Louis Cartier, inspired by the shape of WWI military tanks viewed from above, the Tank has been in continuous production for over a century. This guide covers the major vintage Tank variants and what to look for when buying.
The Tank Line Family
Must de Cartier Tank
Launched in 1977, the Must de Cartier line brought Cartier to a wider audience. These watches use sterling silver cases with 20-micron 18K gold electroplating (vermeil), giving the look of solid gold at a fraction of the cost. The Must Tank uses manual wind or quartz movements from ETA.
Key features: Sterling silver with gold plating, blue cabochon crown, Roman numeral dial, Louis Cartier strap with deployant buckle.
Dial variants: Standard white, burgundy, blue, green, and the rare yellow "Limoncello." Coloured dial variants command significant premiums.
Price range: Rs 40,000 to Rs 2,00,000 depending on condition, dial, and rarity.
Cartier Tank Française
Introduced in 1996 at Cartier's 150th anniversary, the Tank Française features an integrated link bracelet design with the traditional Tank case shape. Steel, two-tone, and gold versions exist. The quartz movement makes it low maintenance.
Key features: Integrated bracelet, curved Tank case, date window, steel or gold construction.
Price range: Rs 60,000 to Rs 3,50,000+.
Cartier Tank Louis Cartier
The purist's Tank. Classical proportions, manual wind movement, no date. This is the Tank most faithful to Louis Cartier's original 1917 design. Usually in solid 18K gold.
Price range: Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 15,00,000+.
Cartier Tank Américaine
Introduced in 1989, the Américaine is a larger, curved-case variant of the Tank. Designed to wrap around the wrist with a slight curve. Steel, gold, and two-tone versions.
Price range: Rs 2,50,000 to Rs 15,00,000.
Cartier Tank MC
A modern interpretation of the Tank with Cartier's in-house automatic movement. Larger case, sportier proportions. Late vintage (2010s) so borderline modern pre-owned.
Price range: Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 10,00,000.
Cartier Tank Solo
The entry-level modern Tank. Steel case, quartz movement, Roman numeral dial. Simpler construction than the Louis Cartier but true to the Tank shape.
Price range: Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 2,50,000.
The Must de Cartier Boom
The Must line was considered "cheap Cartier" for decades, often trading at Rs 30,000-50,000. That changed around 2020 when collectors rediscovered the line. Celebrities started wearing them, social media visibility exploded, and prices doubled.
The coloured dial variants have appreciated the most. A Must Tank with a standard silver dial might sell for Rs 60,000 today. The same reference with a burgundy, blue, or yellow dial can command Rs 1,50,000 or more.
If you are buying a Must Tank:
- Standard silver dials are still the best value
- Coloured dials are premium but check authenticity carefully
- Original Cartier strap and deployant buckle add significant value
- Original box adds Rs 10,000-15,000 to value
Authentication Tips
Dial printing. Cartier dial printing is extremely precise. The Roman numerals should be perfectly proportioned, the "Cartier" signature at 12 should be crisp, and the "Swiss Made" text at 6 should be exactly positioned. Any deviation suggests refinishing or fake.
Crown cabochon. Cartier crowns use a cabochon (domed) blue sapphire (or synthetic blue stone on Must models). Check that the stone is correctly set, proportional to the crown, and not replaced with an aftermarket stone.
Caseback engraving. Must de Cartier casebacks are engraved with the Cartier signature, the reference number, and the case material (vermeil on sterling silver). Laser engraving indicates a replacement or fake caseback.
Sapphire vs mineral crystal. Vintage Tank Must watches used mineral crystal. Modern Tanks use sapphire. If the seller claims a 1980s Must has a sapphire crystal, something is wrong.
Movement. Must de Cartier used ETA-based calibers. Louis Cartier and Tank Américaine vintage references often used JLC-based calibers or later in-house movements. Verify the caliber matches the reference.
Hallmarks. Sterling silver Must cases are marked "925" or with a Helvetia head stamp. Check for French import marks if the watch was originally sold in France.
